The investigation into the Chankharpul incident in Old Dhaka—recognised as the first genocide case from the July-August uprising—has been completed. A report has been filed against eight members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), including its former commissioner.
Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Tajul Islam, confirmed the development on Monday.
He stated that the investigation was completed in 195 days and resulted in a 90-page report.
Among the accused are former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, and former ADC of Ramna Zone, Shah Alam.
Tajul Islam said, “Six people were killed in Chankharpul on August 5. The investigation into that massacre has now concluded. The investigation agency submitted its report to us on Sunday. This marks the first completed investigation into any massacre from the July-August uprising. The report has been filed against eight police officers, including the former DMP commissioner.”
He added, “Senior officers have been charged under the principle of command responsibility, while those who directly fired shots have been identified through various videos. The incident also implicates the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the then Inspector General of Police (IGP).”
He further noted that four of the accused in this case are currently fugitives.
