Three sentenced to death for killing e-bike driver in Jashore

Three men have been sentenced to death by a Jashore court for the 2021 murder of Al Amin, an easy-bike driver from Harishpur village in Shalikha upazila of Magura. Another accused in the case that has been handed a two-year jail term with hard labour.

The verdict was announced on Sunday (3 August) by Judge Jayanti Rani Das of Jashore’s Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2, confirmed Additional Public Prosecutor SM Abdur Razzak.

The three convicts sentenced to death are Jewel Khan, son of Jahangir Khan from Rampur village in Shalikha; Harun-or-Rashid, son of Selim Hossain from the same area; and Alamin, son of Hazrat Ali from Mathurapur village in Jashore Sadar upazila.

The fourth accused, Rasel Molla, son of Sultan Molla of Sabujnagar village in Pirojpur’s Mathbaria upazila, currently residing in the Raypara Billal Mosque area of Jashore city, was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 10,000. In default, he will have to serve an additional three months in prison.

Among the convicts, Harun is currently in jail and was present during the verdict announcement along with Rasel. Jewel escaped from court police custody after appearing in court from jail, while Alamin has been absconding since securing bail.

According to the case documents, Al Amin, son of Mostafizur Rahman from Harishpur, used to drive an e-bike for a living. On 9 December 2021, he left home in the afternoon with his e-bike for passenger transport but did not return. His phone was found switched off when family members tried to contact him.

The following day, family members were informed through a relative that Al Amin’s e-bike had been recovered by police from the Chanchra outpost in Jashore. Later, his body was discovered beside a road in Budhpur village under Bagharpara upazila by locals.

On 11 December, Al Amin’s father filed a murder case with Bagharpara Police Station against unidentified persons.

On 25 December that year, RAB arrested Jewel, Harun, and Alamin for their alleged involvement in the murder. Rasel was arrested for purchasing the stolen e-bike. The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Harshit Roy, submitted the charge sheet against the four on 15 May 2022.

After reviewing witness testimonies and evidence, the court found Jewel, Harun, and Alamin guilty of murder and sentenced them to death, along with a fine of Tk 40,000 each. Rasel was found guilty of receiving stolen property and handed two years in prison with hard labour.
