The 275-megawatt third unit of the Barapukuria coal-fired thermal power plant has resumed electricity generation. According to the plant’s Chief Engineer Md Abu Bakkar Siddique, the unit began supplying 150 to 160 megawatts to the national grid from 7:00 pm on Wednesday.

The third unit had gone offline in the early hours of 21 July due to a mechanical fault. On the same day, the 125MW first unit also stopped operating around 1:00 pm. It was later restored around 11:45 pm the following night, on 22 July.

With the third unit back in operation, some relief is expected in the load-shedding situation across the northern region. The total generation capacity of the Barapukuria power plant stands at 525 megawatts.
