The National Citizen Party (NCP) on Saturday called for a radical transformation of the state’s structure through fundamental reforms to reflect the spirit of the July mass uprising and to prevent fascist or autocratic tendencies in future governments.
NCP Convener Nahid Islam emphasised that the type of reform they seek involves fundamental and qualitative changes that would bring about a complete structural overhaul of the state.
He made the remarks during his opening speech at a dialogue with the National Consensus Commission, held at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Complex.
A delegation of eight NCP members, led by Nahid Islam, participated in the discussions, which began at 10:30 am. The session was chaired by Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission.
The dialogue is part of a series of ongoing talks organised by the Commission with various political parties, aimed at achieving national consensus on state reform initiatives introduced by the interim government.
During the meeting, Nahid Islam criticised the politicisation of key state institutions, including the Constitution. He stated that the foundations of a centralised, one-person-dominated structure were embedded in the Constitution, which continues to influence governance.
He further explained that as long as this structure remains intact, there will be a persistent tendency among those in power to lean towards fascism and authoritarian rule, regardless of the individual or party in charge of the government.
