Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has clearly said that it does not support any amendment to the Constitution without a two-thirds majority in the National Parliament and the participation of opposition parties.

Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher made this remark while talking to journalists at a press briefing during a lunch break of their dialogue with the National Consensus Commission (NCC) on Tuesday.

Jamaat Assistant Secretaries General – Rafiqul Islam Khan and Dr AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad – were also present at the briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka where the second round of the 14-day dialogue between political parties and the NCC was held.

Dr Taher said, “Jamaat is opposed to any constitutional amendment made solely by one party or the government. A two-thirds majority in the national parliament is necessary for such an amendment, and the opinion of the opposition must also be taken into account.”

“A referendum should be held on fundamental constitutional matters, and it must serve the interests of the state,” he added.

The Jamaat leader added, “Except for a few parties, most of us agree on the need for a bicameral parliament. In this regard, emphasis has been placed on adopting the proportional representation (PR) system.”

He also noted, “Jamaat supports the increase in the number of women’s seats in parliament to 100, but this too must follow the proportional representation method.”
