A court in Dhaka has granted bail to a 17-year-old teenager arrested in connection with the death of construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim, who was run over by a car in the capital’s Baridhara, against a bail bond of Tk2,000.
Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of the Dhaka Nari O Shishu Nirjatan Daman Tribunal-8 passed the order on Thursday following a hearing on the case filed under the Road Transport Act.
State lawyer Mohammad Sharif Uddin Mamun confirmed the development, saying that defence lawyers submitted a bail petition for the teenager which was opposed by the state prosecution before the tribunal granted bail.
Earlier, police arrested the teenager on 23 September from a house on Gulshan Road No 12. On Sunday, the same tribunal ordered him to be sent to a juvenile correction centre after rejecting a bail petition filed on his behalf following a hearing that day.
The incident occurred at around 5pm on 22 September, when construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim, 24, was resting on the footpath of Road No 1 in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone. A speeding private car lost control and ran over him. He was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where attending doctors declared him dead.
Onlookers at the scene detained the teenager sitting in the driver’s seat and handed him over to the police. However, following questioning, police released him into his uncle’s custody that same night.
On 23 September, the victim’s brother, Moktadir Islam, lodged a case under the Road Transport Act with Gulshan Police Station. Although car driver Akash Marak was named as the accused in the case, the name of the teenager found in the driver’s seat was omitted. Following public criticism over the omission, Gulshan Police Station took the teenager into custody later that day.
