South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder, captaining the side for the first time, declared his innings unbeaten on 367 runs against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on the second day of the second Test on 7 July 2025. His remarkable knock places him fifth on the list of highest individual scores in Test cricket, just 33 runs short of Brian Lara’s world record 400 not out made in Antigua in 2004.
Mulder’s innings included 49 fours and four sixes off 334 balls, surpassing South African great Hashim Amla’s previous national record of 311 not out. His score is also the highest ever by a visiting batsman in Test cricket, beating Pakistan’s Hanif Mohammad’s 337 in Barbados in 1958.
South Africa declared their innings at 626 for five, with Mulder opting not to chase Lara’s record, instead ensuring his team’s strong position. His triple-century is only the second by a South African, following Amla’s 311* at The Oval in 2012. Mulder reached 300 runs from just 297 balls, making it the second-fastest triple-century in Test history after Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball 300 against South Africa in 2008.
The all-rounder, 27, was promoted to number three batting late last year after most of his 21-Test career was spent lower down the order. This innings marked only his third century in Test cricket, following a 147 in the second innings of the first Test against Zimbabwe.
Mulder’s innings also rewrote the record books for highest individual scores in away Tests, topping the previous best of 337 by Hanif Mohammad. Other notable away scores include Wally Hammond’s 336 not out in Auckland in 1933 and Mark Taylor’s 334 not out in Peshawar in 1998.
