56 prisoners to be released after 20yrs behind bars

prisonersThe government has approved the release of 56 inmates, who were sentenced to life-term imprisonment and have already served 20 years in jail, including remission.

Md Jannat-ul Farhad, assistant inspector general (Media and Development) of the Directorate of Prisons, confirmed the development on Tuesday.

He said that the government has ordered the release of 56 life-term prisoners, who have completed 20 years. The government has commuted the remaining life sentences.

The release was authorised under Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, in line with Prison Rule 569—commonly known as the ‘Twelve-Year Rule’, he added.

However, the Directorate of Prisons did not disclose the names and identities of the 56 prisoners whose sentences have been commuted.
