Baba Adam Mosque: A 550-year-old witness to history in Munshiganj

Baba Adam Mosque is a historic architectural monument, a silent witness to the passage of time. This centuries-old structure has stood in Dargabari village of Munshiganj Sadar upazila for around 550 years.

An outstanding example of Sultanate-era architecture, the mosque is a living document of the region’s history. It holds special appeal for history enthusiasts and tourists due to its historical significance.

Malik Kafur Shah, ruler of Bikrampur, built this mosque in 1483 to commemorate the preacher Baba Adam.

Since 1948, the Department of Archaeology has overseen its maintenance. The mosque’s khatib, Maulana Mahbubur Rahman, said, “This mosque, a bearer of history and heritage, is pleasantly temperate, which makes it comfortable for worshippers to pray here.”

The Times of Bangladesh spoke to local resident Kamal Hossain, who said, “A saint named Baba Adam came from the Middle East to spread Islam in this region. However, the then ruler Ballal Sen had him killed. Several hundred years later, Malik Kafur established this mosque in his memory.”

The mosque’s architectural style reflects the features of the Sultanate period. This small brick structure has three domes. The central dome is comparatively larger and its ornamentation is particularly notable.

The surrounding walls are richly adorned with terracotta decorations. The intricate terracotta designs significantly enhance the mosque’s beauty. The use of motifs such as vines, flowers, geometric patterns, and various designs exemplify the fine artistry of that era. The mihrab and interior walls also display delicate ornamentation.

This historic mosque has witnessed many rises and falls over the centuries. Although some parts were damaged due to natural disasters and neglect, the main structure still stands. The Department of Archaeology has carried out restorations at various times.

Baba Adam Mosque is not merely a historical structure; it is deeply embedded in the lives of the local people. The mosque regularly sees gatherings of worshippers. At different times, tourists from far and wide also visit this historic site. Its peaceful and serene surroundings bring comfort to the mind.

Locals believe it is important to improve modern facilities around the mosque and raise awareness about its historical significance. Many also emphasise the need for proper maintenance to preserve this priceless heritage for future generations.

The Baba Adam Mosque in Munshiganj is not just a building; it is a reflection of Muslim history. Its architecture, historical value, and the faith and affection of the local community give it a unique place. Preserving this heritage site is a responsibility shared by all.
