A fire at a power substation in Dhaka’s Moghbazar disrupted electricity supply in several parts of the capital on Saturday, leaving thousands of consumers without power for hours.
Three units of Tejgaon Fire Service brought the blaze under control after reaching the substation in the afternoon.
The fire caused power disruptions in areas including Karwan Bazar, Tejgaon, Banglamotor, Moghbazar and New Eskaton.
Residents of the affected areas faced severe inconvenience as the outage continued for several hours.
Although power was restored in some locations through alternative arrangements, parts of Banglamotor and New Eskaton remained without electricity until 9pm.
Mohammad Tarikul Haque, chief engineer of Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), said the outage occurred due to technical complications caused by the fire at the Moghbazar substation.
“The fire at the Moghbazar substation created technical problems, which is why restoring electricity is taking time. We are working to bring power back to different areas in phases,” he told TIMES of Bangladesh.
He said all affected consumers were expected to receive electricity services again by 10pm.
