Uber has launched its car ride-sharing services in Sylhet, expanding access to its mobility platform in Bangladesh.
Announcing the launch on Wednesday, Uber said residents and visitors in Sylhet can now request rides through the Uber app, while drivers in the city will have access to flexible earning opportunities.
Commenting on the launch, Uber Bangladesh Country General Manager Redwan Rezvi said, “We are delighted to launch Uber in Sylhet and bring our technology platform to one of Bangladesh’s most dynamic and culturally significant cities.”
“Bangladesh continues to be an important market for Uber, and we remain committed to expanding access to reliable mobility while creating flexible economic opportunities for drivers. We look forward to serving the people of Sylhet and becoming a trusted part of the city’s everyday movement,” he added.
Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury said Uber’s launch in Sylhet would enhance urban mobility, strengthen the city’s tourism and business sectors and create new earning opportunities for local drivers.
“The Government of Bangladesh is committed to fostering innovation that creates decent employment and supports inclusive economic growth,” he said.
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen said Uber’s service in Sylhet reflected confidence in the city and Bangladesh’s future.
“Uber started in the United States, but its success has always depended on local people—drivers, riders, entrepreneurs and communities,” he said.
He added that the service represented American technology meeting a local need, creating opportunities for Bangladeshi drivers and giving consumers more choices.
Uber launched in Bangladesh in 2016 and has since expanded its presence across multiple cities and divisions. Previously, only Uber Moto and Uber Rentals were available in Sylhet.
The company said the launch marked another step in its efforts to make safe, reliable and convenient mobility more accessible across Bangladesh.
