Nearly a decade after Star Wars Battlefront II was released, fans are still praising Matt Mercer’s portrayal of Luke Skywalker, with many saying the acclaimed voice actor proved the iconic character can be successfully recast.

Mark Hamill has portrayed Luke Skywalker in six live-action Star Wars films since the character first appeared in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in 1977. His performance helped turn the Jedi hero into one of cinema’s most recognisable characters, making any potential successor a daunting prospect.

While Hamill has remained the face of Luke in live action, he did not voice the character in the 2017 video game Star Wars Battlefront II. Instead, the role went to veteran voice actor Matt Mercer, whose performance has continued to draw praise from fans years after the game’s release.

The discussion resurfaced after a social media user shared footage from the game, arguing that Mercer demonstrated how Luke could be recast successfully. The post suggested that capturing the character’s spirit mattered more than closely imitating Hamill’s appearance or voice.

Many fans echoed the sentiment, applauding Mercer for faithfully portraying Luke’s personality and values. Others questioned why the franchise could introduce multiple actors for Anakin Skywalker while Luke remained so closely tied to Hamill.

With Hamill now approaching his 75th birthday, discussion about Luke Skywalker’s future has continued among fans. Although Lucasfilm has made no announcement about recasting the role in live action, Mercer’s performance in Star Wars Battlefront II has become a popular example of how the character could eventually pass to a new actor while preserving the qualities that made him a fan favourite.
