Middlesbrough have named Rob Edwards as their new head coach on a three-year contract, following the departure of Michael Carrick earlier this summer.
The 42-year-old former Luton Town boss takes over at the Riverside Stadium after emerging as the preferred candidate ahead of several high-profile names, including Steve Cooper and Danny Rohl. Edwards is also understood to have turned down interest from other clubs, notably Bristol City, to take on the role.
Edwards rose to prominence after guiding Luton Town to a historic promotion to the Premier League in the 2022/23 season—his first in charge of the club. However, the Hatters’ top-flight campaign ended in disappointment, as they were relegated on the final day of the season.
He parted ways with Luton in January with the club sitting 20th in the Championship. Luton’s struggles continued under his successor, Matt Bloomfield, culminating in relegation on the final day of the 2024/25 Championship season.
Edwards now begins a new chapter at Middlesbrough, who will be hoping his track record of achieving promotion can be replicated on Teesside as they prepare for the new campaign.
