Dead dolphins have been found washed ashore along the Cox’s Bazar coastline, raising concerns over marine safety and the impact of fishing activities in coastal waters.
At least two dolphins have been discovered dead on the shore over the past five days, both showing visible injury marks on their bodies.
According to local residents, a dead dolphin washed ashore on Sunday morning and became stranded on the sand dunes of Monkhali beach in Ukhiya.
The carcass was found lying on the beach early in the morning, emitting a foul smell, with several injury marks visible on different parts of its body.
Locals said the dolphin remained at the spot until at least Monday morning. Sources identified the dolphin as an Irrawaddy dolphin, scientifically known as Orcaella.
On last Thursday, another dead Irrawaddy dolphin was found floating ashore at North Shilkhali beach in Baharchhara Union of Teknaf upazila. That dolphin also showed signs of injuries on its body.
Local residents suspect the dolphins may have died after becoming entangled in fishing nets and were later carried to the shore by sea currents.
