Domestic worker Ayesha killed Laila Afroz and her daughter Nafisa in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur after being threatened with police action for stealing money and jewellery, police said on Thursday.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam confirmed the matter at a press briefing, citing findings from the preliminary investigation.
He said Ayesha stole Tk2,000 on her second day of work. The following day, she had an argument with Laila over the theft. On the day of the incident, Ayesha returned to work carrying a knife. During a quarrel, she repeatedly stabbed Laila. Hearing the noise, Nafisa woke up and tried to call for help, but Ayesha stabbed her as well.
The police official also said Ayesha has a criminal tendency. In July, a general diary (GD) was filed against her at Mohammadpur Police Station over the theft of Tk8,000. She also stole money from her sister’s house.
After the Mohammadpur double murder, Ayesha stole valuables including a mobile phone and a laptop from the house, disguised herself, and fled. She then went to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, changed her clothes, and headed towards Hemayetpur. From there, she travelled to her grandfather-in-law’s house in Jhalakathi, according to police.
Police later recovered the stolen mobile phone, laptop, jewellery, and the knife used in the killings from that location. They said the preliminary investigation found no involvement of a third party in the murders, though the investigation is still ongoing.
On Monday morning, Laila Afroz and Nafisa were found murdered in their apartment on the seventh floor of a residential building on Shahjahan Road in Mohammadpur area.
CCTV footage from the building showed a woman entering the lift wearing a burqa and covering her face. Moments later, the same woman was seen leaving in a school uniform, carrying a bag and with her face covered.
