Sarjis Alam, chief organiser (north) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), cautioned that hastily holding elections without ensuring proper reforms could tarnish the post-uprising Bangladesh.

He emphasised that the focus should be on completing necessary reforms and delivering justice before proceeding to elections, ideally by June as per the interim government stated.

Speaking at a street rally in Domar upazila of Nilphamari on Monday, Sarjis stated, “Holding the election hastily cannot be the point of discussion. Rather, the focus should be on ensuring transparency and fairness. Only when the processes are complete — justice delivered, and necessary reforms implemented — should the interim government hold elections.”

He further asserted that all parties are united against the Awami League, declaring, “In this Bangladesh, there is no room for the return of the Awami League. The return of Hasina is impossible. If she returns, it will only be to stand in the dock of justice.”

The NCP leader further stated, “We have witnessed the political culture of the past 16 years. Starting from murderous Hasina to her accomplices, all have constantly talked down to leaders and activists of other political parties, using vile language. Now, we see some senior leaders from certain political parties adopting the same tone.

“Let us be clear — if you continue the same oppressive rhetoric that was used to subjugate you for so long, the people will cast you aside. If you revive that culture, you too will eventually become its victims,” he added.

“But this young generation will no longer tolerate such a culture. So, choose your words carefully. Your language will determine whether you are respected or are just another voice,” warned the NCP leader.

Addressing the BNP and other political parties, Sarjis urged unity and cautioned against internal divisions, stating, “Let us not create internal divisions by making irrational or irrelevant comments. Those currently in government do not directly represent any party. They are representatives of the mass uprising, and they assumed their roles following consultations with all political parties.”

The NCP’s campaign began in Domar and is set to cover all six upazilas of Nilphamari, focusing on public outreach and leaflet distribution where Sarjis Alam called on voters to prioritise candidates’ integrity over party affiliation, urging them to support individuals who are committed to serving the people.
