England allrounder Moeen Ali has confirmed that he will not enter the Indian Premier League mini auction scheduled for 16 December in Abu Dhabi, choosing instead to commit to the Pakistan Super League where he previously featured.
Moeen, released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the upcoming auction, announced his decision through a message on social media. The 38 year old said that playing in Pakistan has always been a rewarding experience, praising both the standard of cricket and the passion of local supporters. He added that he is preparing for another memorable spell in the competition. Moeen has already had two stints in the PSL, representing Multan Sultans in 2020 and 2021.
His choice follows that of former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, who also withdrew from the IPL and explained in a public statement that stepping away after 14 seasons was a significant and emotional call. Du Plessis reflected on his time in the league with gratitude, noting the calibre of teammates, franchises and support he experienced.
Australia allrounder Glenn Maxwell has also pulled out of the IPL, although he has not yet indicated whether he intends to pursue a deal in the PSL.
The schedules of the IPL and PSL are set to run almost concurrently, limiting players to one competition. While the IPL remains the financial and commercial powerhouse of franchise cricket, the PSL player pool is strengthening. For some, the prospect of missing out on an IPL contract has become an influential factor in committing to Pakistan’s league.
