A total of 77 people, including women and children, were injured in Dhaka and surrounding areas on Saturday while performing Qurbani (sacrificial animal slaughter) on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Injuries were caused by kicks and horn attacks from cattle, as well as accidental cuts from sharp knives used during the sacrifice.
The injured individuals were brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment, hospital authorities confirmed.
Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed, Residential Surgeon of DMCH’s Emergency Department, said, “From this morning until 3 PM, we received 77 patients who were injured while performing Qurbani in the capital and nearby areas. Three of them have been admitted for further treatment.”
Inspector Md. Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, also confirmed the incident to the media. “A total of 77 people, including women and children, were brought to the emergency department with various injuries — including stab wounds from sharp tools, and blows from cattle horns and kicks. Three have been admitted to the hospital, while the rest were released after receiving first aid,” he said.
He added that the concerned local police stations have been informed of the incidents.
It is worth noting that such injuries are common during Eid-ul-Adha each year, as untrained individuals often handle large animals and sharp instruments during the ritual slaughter, leading to frequent accidents.
