The administration of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has permanently expelled 64 students and revoked the degrees of 73 former students for their involvement in the violent attacks on protesters during the July 2024 uprising. The students were found to be affiliated with the banned student organization, Bangladesh Chhatra League, and participated in the attacks between July 14 and July 17 last year.

The university’s highest decision-making body, the Syndicate, made the decision based on the findings of an investigative committee regarding the attack. The committee’s report was presented following a Syndicate meeting held on Monday. JU Vice Chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan confirmed the details to the media.

Professor Ahsan stated, “A total of 229 students were involved in the attacks. Among them, 99 were former students and 130 were current students. Out of the current students, 64 have been permanently expelled. 37 students were expelled for two years, 8 for one year, and one for six months.”

As for the former students involved in the attacks, 73 had their degrees permanently revoked, while the degrees of 6 others were suspended for two years, depending on the severity of their crimes.

The Vice Chancellor further mentioned that the involvement of outsiders and law enforcement officers in the attack, alongside Chhatra League members, falls outside the purview of university laws. As a result, their cases will be referred to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for further investigation.

Additionally, 40 students have been exonerated as there was no direct or indirect evidence against them, and no link was found between them and the attacks during video footage analysis. The exonerated students included 20 current and 20 former students.
