A total of 5,500 kg of banned polythene was seized in coordinated drives across Chawkbazar, Imamganj, Swarighat and Lalbagh areas of the capital on 3 August 2025, according to a press release from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The operations, conducted with assistance from law enforcement agencies, also included warnings issued to superstore owners and shopkeepers found stocking or using illegal polythene.
The Department of Environment (DoE) carried out further enforcement actions through mobile courts in Khulna and Sirajganj in response to complaints about the production and sale of banned polythene. Two separate cases led to fines totalling Tk 10,000 for violations under Section 6(a) of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995 (amended 2010).
In Tangail, an illegal lead battery manufacturing unit was dismantled by the DoE. Meanwhile, mobile courts operating in Dhaka’s West Agargaon and Ramna neighbourhoods imposed Tk 30,000 in fines across three cases related to air pollution from construction material mismanagement.
The ministry stated that anti-pollution and enforcement campaigns will continue to curb the use of banned items and unauthorised industrial practices.
