500,000 Saudi riyals looted in Tejgaon through ‘staged robbery’

Police have arrested six individuals in connection with the reported looting of 500,000 Saudi riyals from a money exchange firm in Dhaka’s Tejgaon area.

Among the arrested is an employee of the company, confirmed Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aslam Hossain on Wednesday.

According to police, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening when an employee of the money exchange company was transporting the foreign currency from Paltan to Uttara in a private car.

As the car approached Dhaka Polytechnic Institute in Tejgaon, a group intercepted the vehicle, held the employee at gunpoint, and looted the currency.

Following a complaint filed that night, police launched overnight raids and arrested six suspects.

A total of 269,000 Saudi riyals were recovered during the operation. The market value of the looted amount is estimated at Tk 1.65 crore.

OC Aslam Hossain said preliminary investigation suggests the robbery was staged.

The arrested employee is believed to have colluded with the others. All six suspects are currently being interrogated, and further details will be disclosed in due course.
