Students and classmates of Shahriar Alam Shammo issued 48 hours’ time to the police to arrest the “real culprits” behind his murder while laying siege to Shahbagh police station on Friday.

Staging a sit-in there for more than an hour and a half, the protestors warned that if their demands are not met, they will go for even a stricter programme from Sunday.

The protestors under the banner of ‘General Students of Bangladesh’ alleged the arrestees are not the real culprits. The masterminds have not been netted yet because of the delaying tactic by police, they said.

Earlier, the demonstrators massed outside the anti-violence sculpture, Raju, around 11:00 am before heading towards the police station in procession.

At the programme, the students chanted slogans like ‘My brother is in the grave, why are the killers still free?’ and ‘Shahbagh police station, we want answers’.

Later, a group of student representatives met Shahbagh police and discussed the current situation before returning to the campus.

After emerging from the meeting, the student leaders announced to the media their plans to continue with their movement.

Meanwhile, the court on Wednesday ordered the three suspects to jail in the Shammo murder case after the law-enforcers had produced the trio in the court following their captures from different areas of the city.

Shammo was stabbed by some rowdies inside Suhrawardy Udyan on the night of May 13.

The incident took place when his motorcycle collided with theirs, thereby beginning an altercation. At one stage, the attackers stabbed Shammo.

After midnight, he was found in a severely injured condition and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Shammo was the literary and publicity secretary of the student wing of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Sir AF Rahman Hall, Dhaka University.

He was a master’s student at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at the university.

He hailed from Ullapara upazila under the northern district of Sirajganj.
