Four people were killed after a bus overturned and fell onto an e-rickshaw in Lahirikanda area of Jamalpur on Monday evening.
At least 15 others were injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment at Jamalpur General Hospital and Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
The accident took place at around 7:30pm near the Lahirikanda Eidgah field area on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh highway.
Three of the deceased have been identified as Mohammad Jalal Uddin, 60, son of late Yunus Ali of Baitkamari area under Jamalpur Sadar; Mohammad Mokbul Hossain, 65, son of late Atahar Ali of Tulshipur Segua area; and Saddam Hossain, 40, son of Faridul Islam of Baitkamari area.
The identity of the fourth victim, aged around 28, could not be established.
Jamalpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazmus Sakib said a Dhaka-bound bus of Rajib Paribahan was travelling from Jamalpur when it nearly collided with an e-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction.
The driver of the bus lost control while trying to avoid the collision, causing the vehicle to overturn and fall onto the e-rickshaw. Passengers of both vehicles were trapped under the overturned bus.
Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel rushed to the spot after receiving the information and launched a rescue operation. Three bodies were recovered from the scene initially, while the injured were rescued and taken to hospitals. Later, a doctor on duty declared another victim dead.
Following the accident, traffic movement on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh highway was suspended, creating long tailbacks on both sides of the road. The situation returned to normal around 10pm after a recovery vehicle removed the overturned bus.
Police said legal action over the accident is underway.
