At least three workers were killed and another injured when a wall collapsed during the demolition of an abandoned building of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in Netrakona on Thursday.

Netrakona Fire Service Station Officer Alam Khan confirmed the deaths, stating that the injured worker has been taken to the hospital for treatment. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.

Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board Sarwar Jahan said the building was officially declared abandoned and had been handed over to a contractor for demolition through a formal tender process.

“We were informed that the wall collapsed while the contractor’s workers were dismantling the structure, resulting in the deaths of three labourers,” he said, adding that the incident appears to be due to the contractor’s negligence.

The BWDB engineer Jahan, who was in Dhaka at the time, said he was on his way to the site after being informed of the tragedy.
