Police have arrested three individuals for their alleged involvement in mugging Tk 30 lakh from two employees of a business house in the capital impersonating themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

The arrestees are Md Shamim Rahman (29), Md Mizan Rahman (51), and Rabiul Islam Jewel (42).

According to a press release issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Monday, they were detained in separate drives conducted in Dhaka and Jhalakhati between June 27 and 29.

Law enforcers also seized a Hiace microbus used in the robbery, Tk 80,000 from Mizan, and Tk 9,000 from Jewel.

The release stated that the incident occurred on June 26, when two employees – Khalil Mia, 26, and Ibrahim Hossain Rifat, 24, – were carrying Tk 30 lakh to deposit those at a City Bank branch in Motijheel.

Six to seven men intercepted them in front of a local hotel at around 1:45pm, claiming to be DB officers.

The victims were forced into a Hiace microbus, assaulted, and robbed at gunpoint. Their hands and feet were tied before being dumped near the Signboard bus stand.

Locals later rescued them and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Following the incident, business owner Saidul Islam filed a case with Motijheel Police Station. Using technological surveillance, police identified and apprehended the three suspects.

The DMP also revealed that Mizan has two prior robbery cases pending – one with Rajapur Police Station in Jhalakhati and another with Araihazar Police Station in Narayanganj.

Police are continuing efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects.
