Two Bangladeshi college students who were detained by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) after entering Indian territory along the Naogaon border have been returned to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), officials confirmed on Monday.
According to locals, the students — Mohammad Minhazul Islam (23) of Naogaon Degree College, and Tamim Ahmed Sourav (23) of Sapahar Government Degree College — reportedly crossed the border via the Bamnopara area of Aihai Union in Sapahar upazila to film TikTok videos and take selfies.
BSF members allegedly apprehended the duo on Monday afternoon after they and a group of five to six friends entered Indian territory without any authorisation. A BGB team was immediately dispatched to recover them but was unsuccessful initially.
Following the incident, a flag meeting was held between the BSF and BGB, during which the Indian authorities handed over the two students to Bangladeshi officials.
Lt Col Sadikur Rahman, commandant of the BGB-16 Battalion, confirmed the return and said the students were subsequently handed over to local police.
Abdul Aziz, officer-in-charge of Sapahar Police Station, said a case has been filed against the students on charges of trespassing under relevant legal provisions.
