A man was beaten to death by mob on suspicion of theft in Tangail while another person, who was critically injured in mob beating in Jhenaidah, succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning.

Tangail

A 32-year-old man named Jahirul Islam was beaten to death by a mob while attempting to flee with a stolen auto-rickshaw in Sakhipur, Tangail on Friday morning.

Jahirul was the son of Abdur Rashid Mia from Ramdevbari in Gopalpur Municipality, Tangail. Quoting locals, police said Jahirul stole an auto-rickshaw belonging to Bablu Mia from Rajniti Mor village in Shreepur early Friday morning. When he reached Paodwachala village, locals caught him red-handed, and an angry crowd lynched him on the spot.

Sakhipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Bhuiyan confirmed the incident, stating, “The body has been recovered and sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Legal action is underway.”

Jhenaidah

Sujan, 35, a youth from Garaganj area of Shailkupa Upazila, died while undergoing treatment after being beaten by a mob on suspicion of mobile phone theft.

He passed away at Jhinaidah 250-Bed General Hospital around 11:30am on Friday. Sujan was the son of Abul Kashem and lived with his wife in Power House Para of Jhinaidah Municipality.

Dr Farhana Sharmin, an emergency doctor at the hospital, said, “The patient was admitted on Thursday afternoon due to physical assault. He was receiving treatment but died around 11:30 am on Friday.”

Reports say that early Wednesday morning, Sujan was beaten on the 7th floor of the Jhinaidah General Hospital by relatives of patients who accused him of stealing a mobile phone.

A video of the assault went viral on social media. On Wednesday morning, police from Sadar Police Station took custody of Sujan. According to Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Abdullah Al Mamun, Sujan was released the same day into the custody of his wife. However, no formal complaints have been filed regarding the theft or his death.

Dr Md Mustafizur Rahman, the superintendent of Jhinaidah General Hospital, said, “On Thursday afternoon, I was informed that a man was lying on the hospital stairs, and I ordered his admission. His treatment was ongoing. I was on leave when I was told the patient had died around 1:45 pm. I was not informed about the mob attack over the mobile theft on Wednesday morning.”

Sujan’s body was kept in the hospital morgue on Friday afternoon, but no relatives were found at the hospital or at his in-laws’ house in Power House Para.

When asked about the legal procedure in the case, OC Abdullah Al Mamun said, “It is too early to say at this point.”
