At least 15 lives are lost every day on the country’s roads, according to a new report published by voluntary awareness group Save the Road.

From January to June of 2025, the organisation recorded a total of 17,957 road accidents that left 2,778 people dead and 17,826 injured.

The data was presented at a press conference at the Bijoy Auditorium in the capital Dhaka held on Friday

Shanta Farzana, secretary general of Save the Road said, “The alarming state of road safety is due to a lack of discipline, lack enforcement of traffic laws, and the uncontrolled movement of high speed malcondition vehicles.”

The organisation stated that rickshaws and CNGs were involved in 8,812 accidents, resulting in 795 deaths. In addition, 825 people were killed in 3,404 bus accidents, while 673 died in 3,714 motorcycle accidents. A further 485 fatalities occurred in truck and pickup van crashes.

Save the Road Founder Momin Mehedi said the situation is worsening due to “administrative negligence and corruption” by various levels of government officials.

Mehedi further said that unfit vehicles, unlicensed drivers, and the rise in unregulated battery-run vehicles have pushed accident rates beyond all previous records.

Acting Chairman Bikash Roy, Wazed Rana, and Kazi Runa were also present at the press conference.
