A 12-year-old house maid died in suspicious circumstances at a residence in Dhanmondi of the capital on Monday afternoon.
The house help, Sadia Akhter, hailed from Bogajori village in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh, had been employed for the last seven months at the house of Hosne Ara Begum, located on the third floor of a five-storey building at Arman Khan Goli, Road No- 9/a, Dhanmondi.
Around 4:45pm, the driver of the house Md Maksud brought the girl in an unconscious state to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced her dead.
According to Maksud, another house maid, Maria Akhter, called him over phone earlier in the afternoon, claiming Sadia had allegedly hanged herself with a towel from the window grille in a bathroom.
Maksud said he rushed to the house and found Sadia lying unconscious on the bathroom floor. She was initially taken to Bangladesh Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
Maksud, however, could not provide further details regarding the incident.
Confirming the death, Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the DMCH Police Camp, said Sadia was brought to the hospital by the driver, Maksud.
He added that Maksud has been detained for questioning, and the body has been kept in the morgue for autopsy.
The incident has been reported to Dhanmondi Police Station, which has launched an investigation, he added.
