A consignment of 100 tonnes of onions arrived at Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj from India on Thursday evening, amid soaring prices in the local market.
Four trucks carrying the consignment entered the country, marking the first shipment in eight months since India halted onion exports.
Mainul Islam, manager of Panama Sonamasjid Port Link Ltd said, “The resumption of imports had broken the stalemate on Indian onion supply.”
Local traders expressed hope that the market would stabilise following the recommencement of imports.
On August 12, Commerce Adviser SK Bashir Uddin announced the import of onions to help cool down local prices.
